    Quantum Computers are here

    Here it is.

It was posted today, I found out because my teacher showed the article to the class.

Let's say you have a difficult problem that you want a computer program to solve because, you know, a total pain in the ass otherwise.

Our best supercomputers would take 10,000 years of constantly running to solve one of these difficult problems.

The quantum computer would do the same problem...in 200 seconds.

    Yeah.

    EDIT:

IBM is contesting the result and saying that the 10,000 years was actually 2.5 days. Even then, it’s still insanely impressive.

That's neat, but what are the applications for them besides finding more of pi?

I had three articles and the goddamn computer shut down, lol. I have them back and a couple others.

It would have ramifications for cybersecurity.
      It could predict chemical reactions.
It would improve medicine, battery technology, and more. Militaries are also interested, so that's an application (...yay...)
It grants "computation control" which is basically the programmer equivalent of god mode.

This is just a narrow search looking at teeny tiny bits of information in the actual articles. I'm sure the applications are much more far reaching the deeper you look into it.

      ...

No, it unfortunately is not going to drastically improve your gaming experience. I asked my Computer Architecture teacher about that (in jest).

          A quadrillion shitposts were made,
and data managers start to pray.

Here’s a video on the thing too.

This one is a lot better.

Yeah, as if A.I. weren't threatening enough already.
Mark my words... It's not going to be some kooky, wild-haired mad scientist type that brings about the end times. It'll be some unassuming computer geek.

It's not too late to throw away all your technology and get a cabin in the woods somewhere while raising some cattle.
                  Stock up on books too.

                  C'mon now

Hopefully it becomes mainstream in a few years. Sounds like an excellent development depending on where it goes.

Elon Musk either shat himself or busted a fat nut upon hearing this news.

It's not going to be "mainstream," it's going to be a research tool.

The thing is held in a vacuum cooled to 0.01 Kelvin (right above absolute zero)...

                        Just so it can work.

So it's pretty great, but you won't find it in a whole lot of places outside of R&D facilities any time soon...

all that processing power you'd be able to have like 2000 tabs of porn open. a full symphony.

They used to need to take up three floors of a government building to have a computer with the processing power if a millionth of an iPhone. Not saying this is necessarily the same thing, I'm just saying that if the demand is there...

I figured as much. It sounds like a new technology for supercomputers or something along those lines now that I look at it again.
And supercomputers have always been there for specialized, large scale, and ultra-high power processes.

On the other hand, this is also a valid perspective, given how fast things are moving these days. However depending on what's being handled, it may also present hurdles that may take a lot of time to overcome.

The big problem I see is that keeping things slightly above absolute zero, then giving that to customers... Like, at some point, someone's gonna break that, and they'd probably die.

The military doesn't need a quantum computer to tell them they need to just build here and leave other countries alone. National defense, not international tyranny.
