We just need someone willing to work across the aisle and ease the animosity between parties, though.

I don't know about that. Democrats "worked across the aisle" when they finally got the ACA passed. But they essentially let republicans gut the bill and made it so bad that it actually caused a lot of the problems it was supposed to fix. There's not really any working with conservatives on issues like healthcare, campaign finance reform, or climate change. Making concessions there just means killing off any hope of actual reform.

Democrats need to focus on their messaging (and voter access) so that the bulk of their base doesn't stay at home during elections. That way they can stamp out conservatism in the government. They're not going to be able to do that by running center-left candidates anymore. It might not happen in 2020 or even in 2022, but there's a takeover happening in the DNC that's going to rival the tea party invasion of the Republican Party.

Well, that's fair I guess, but ideally both sides would be willing to work together. I'm not looking forward to a more radicalized left and an even wider gap between parties.

With any hope, conservatives will realize that their far-right policies will cost them everything and they'll start moving left.

Remember, our "radical left" is basically the regular left everywhere else on Earth. Our moderates are considered conservatives everywhere else. So really, our conservatives are the radical ones that need to go.

And really, the right side seems the more stubborn one by far.

It looks like Senator Harris is pushing for Universal Basic Income?

I'm actually not on board with this. Whereas I don't entirely buy into the "pick yourselves up by the bootstraps" line of thinking that conservatives have, I do believe that if Americans were given 'free' healthcare and college education and we raised the minimum wage and tied it into inflation that something like UBI wouldn't be needed. We can focus on better social programs to help families that still can't survive, but I feel like offering everyone $500 a month will just lead to a lot of unsavory types leeching off the government instead of actively working to better themselves.

If we have free education and healthcare, then yes we don't need UBI. If we don't, then I don't see a problem with it.

Yea.. it sounds crazy but the robots are coming. The robots are coming!

Robotics don't displace jobs, they just move them around. That's why it's absolutely imperative we make college free for everyone that cares about having a decent future. The days of being able to survive without a technical degree of some kind are going away. If most jobs in the next 50 years require higher education, then that education has to be provided as a service to the people. And healthcare is already decided, we'll be moving in the direction of a single-payer system just as soon as all the old, white farts in congress die.

A UBI shouldn't be necessary so I'm probably not going to be onboard with it.

Why are you assuming everyone has the ability to go to college and get a degree? You know dumb people exist, and most of them work blue collar jobs. Free education is a good thing, but let's not pretend like robotics aren't an independent problem.

I don't believe anybody is incapable of learning, save for people with mental conditions that prevent it.

It depends on what you mean by "learning." Do you think your average 40-to-50 year old bricklayer can grasp calculus?

Had several 40-50 year olds in my class that were grasping the material just as well as I was. They had the drive to learn and so they did.

I had to teach my dad what a search engine was more than once.

I dunno what we're talking about, but computer-illiterate dads are the best

Cid thinks getting a (useful) college degree is just a matter of "wanting it" and people aren't limited by age or intelligence.

Your dad knows that you'll come do it for him whenever he asks, so he doesn't put in the effort to learn or remember. My dad was the same way until I moved out. Without me there to constantly do it for him, he was forced to learn how to use his computer himself. After 5 years, he knows enough to download videos from Youtube. He's 63.

I think that putting in effort is certainly a bigger factor than already being smart. Those are definitely limiting factors, but not damning, I wouldn't say.

They can absolutely learn it. They may not pick it up as easily as they could have 20-30 years prior but they can absolutely learn it. The reason why most don't learn it in that field is because it's not pragmatic for them to do so if they have that job. And the job market is much different now than when they started. Retraining does exist and works.

Ok , so since Russia thing turned out to be false ( like we all knew it was ) what will Dems come up with next ?

Also from left supporters , are you guys supporting the 1.4( don't remember exact number) billion deal offerd by dems or against it ? Since border protection is supposedly immoral .
